(Not) Making Movies…..Again

My latest attempt at creating video content and not a boat in sight this time around.

I have been mulling this over for a couple of months so if there’s a video embedded with this post then it should be the first one in a new series that iv’e filmed and created. This time my central idea is to base a video series on the crafting and modeling projects that i’m doing. Those of you that have been around for a while will know that iv’e had two distinct video channels in the past : some of those videos still exist although I cleared many off my desktop some time after I had a series of minor strokes back in 2024.

A big part of my new video project is based around using crafting and model making as a form of tactile therapy for my post stroke state. One of my ongoing physical problems is that I still have quite poor fine control of my fingers so doing anything at a small scale is difficult and the outcomes can be a bit random. I am also some fifty years out of practice with anything like this and even I can see that the hobby has hugely passed me by.

I have the first three videos already planned out and these mostly focus on creating an introduction and then the models that iv’e built or crafted as therapy so far. As yet there’s no one thing that i’m trying to focus on so the first model is a figure in clay (Bagsy) and the next ones are small scale model buildings, the last one of which (currently) is my dolls house scale model of my real workshop which itself is a work in progress. One video is to be bases around me building the indoor worstation and in time the refit of my actual workshop cum crafting space to be might even become part of the series as I have the unusual luxury of setting up a workshop from the ground up. Quite literally as I spent 3 months digging the clay out and putting in the first bags of hardcore. Right now i’m waiting on a local builder to help me with the roof after which iv’e got to refit the interior so it will be months before i’m crafting and model making. in there.

In the meantime iv’e set up a modeling bench in the spare room in our little cottage and that in itself might be the second video in my new series. I have taken a lot of inspiration from professional film prop maker Adam Savage : his mancave gives me serious workshop envy but then he does it for a living – one of the first things iv’e adopted from his practice is that of filming with an Iphone : iv’e quite literally just bought my first one ever and am at the toe sucking baby stage with it so it might yet get thrown right out of the cot !

As they say somewhere : that one got thrown straight out of the cot plus I spat my dummy right out.

Back to writing then eh ?

Afterword.

What happened is this : I decided to pull the trigger on making videos again and at the same time in investing in the same kind of tech that i’d watched Adam Savage using for all of his workshop filming. I set up and filmed one video quite quickly and i’m quite shocked at the result. Needless to say it hadn’t received any views 24 hours later so I deleted it from my newly created channel and in time i’ll get rid of that completely. Over two days iv’e spent hour after frustrating hour trying to get used to the new (refurbished) smartphone : it took me more than 6 tries just to verify the first thing it demanded of me and today I totally failed to set it up as a simple step counter and record. At one point we got to an App that immediately told us it wanted £50 per year just to count and record my steps – and this on a machine that was already doing the work. The upshot of all of that is that iv’e immediately removed from my life two new sources of fuckwittery aka computer related stress : tomorrow i’ll be heading back to my cabin in the woods – axe in hand.
