Seeing The Next Step.

Progress on the workshop rebuild & refit.

It’s the beginning of June 2026 & the weather has just broken with a bang. It’s gone from sauna heat inside the workshop due to it’s new metal roof with no insulation yet to a normally cool and wet English summer. The roof is mostly on and Steve the actual builder only needs a one day return to fit the last panel and the trim plates/flashings. I’m now hard at it most days working on cutting and fitting the plywood panels that comprise the interior wall skin.

I can see the next step that i’m working on as the wall panels and roof insulation panels have to be complete before the electrician moves in to wire the place for sound – not sound as much as i’d like it to be a quiet space but you get what I mean. The next step that I can see is to give the whole place a floor covering that I can live with long term and a chance conversation with the guys up at the local Timber Store showed me the way to go with that. After that it’s back to open house on the ideas and thinking as it looks to me as though it’s initial set up will be based on whatever project gets done in there first.

I’m fairly sure that it’s not going to be a boat ; the plans for SCAMP did finally arrive but iv’e barely glanced at them since they dropped through the mail last week. The first project might be to build a new kitchen sink/dresser unit as the one I made out of an old shabby chick sideboard several years ago either needs a total rebuild or replacement ; iv’e already seen what the next one might be built from and that would be a great inaugural project for the new workshop. Although I can’t say, at this stage, what the first workshop project might be, I think I can see the structure of projects ; I think will be a kind of One,Two, Three pattern where One is infrastructure, Two is tools and Three is the actual job or project.
