Pathfinder project build short progress report 22.09.2022
Working on the galley stowage and stoves.
Good morning everyone, I hope you are all well – short progress report incoming.Having just come back from a camping trip in mostly sunny Dorset and not having any major work to do I thought I would play around with setting up the Pathfinder for it’s more domestic stance – the set up for cooking and such like.
Having built an asymmetric layout I have a pair of large lockers to port, outboard of the case, which will be my combined galley stowage space, food stowage space and a large locker for ‘soft’ dry gear.
This week I made a simple closure system for the locker lids and then spent a while experimenting with my 2 potential stove set-ups and working out which one i’m more likely to use – my last boat had an Origo alcohol/meths stove and I acquired a secondhand one for this boat but equally I have my camping set-up which is now based on camping gaz (I have 4 or 5 full 907 cylinders).
The Origo stove is very low and stable, also very simple and could be stowed in the forward section of the galley locker, the taller camping gaz cylinder is a bit less secure but I quickly built a cylinder support box for it and it seems to sit nicely against the centerboard case…..in easy conditions I could make a brew on the go – iv’e used a similar arrangement before.
The cylinder box holds a 907 cylinder securely and a couple of mugs….working on a simple arrangement to secure the kettle !
I don’t intend to build what many dinghy cruisers use ( a galley box) because I think I have the space to work without one but not quite the space to have a permanent galley set up….I played around with a few ideas with the port lockers but it needed a lot more effort to make it work and just making solid lockers with near watertight tops was challenge enough.
The large central locker top makes a great large working area so at anchor I can spread out my ‘kitchen’ – in fact I have vastly more working space there than I had with the 22′ Liberty.
One of the photo’s shows my other new acquisition which is an arborists rope bag which i’m going to use as the warp bag for the Rocna and I took down the boat’s tarp ridgeline which actually forms the greater part of the rode to stow it in the bag. That will have about 8 meters of chain when I get around to buying some.
Next job/s is that I have to pull the boat forward a bit to start fitting the bummykin and go and see the stainless steel people about making bits for the mainmast…..busier week next and then off to court for a fortnight…..!!!!!
Best wishes Y’awl.
